Sleep Apnoea – How Severe Is It?

Sleep apnoea is the term used to describe a condition where the sufferer stops breathing while asleep. This may be a neurological condition, where the body simply does not trigger the breathing reflex. Far more commonly, the cessation of breathing is because of an obstruction to the airway. When this occurs, the condition is known as ‘obstructive sleep apnoea’. In this situation, the sufferer is trying to breathe while asleep but the soft tissue of the upper airway has collapsed into the airway and blocked it. The harder the person tries to breathe, the more they ‘suck’ the soft tissue into their airway, thus worsening the problem. Sleep apnoea is linked to a wide range of serious conditions and co-morbidities including fatigue, daytime sleepiness, waking tiredness, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, loss of libido and impotence, retarded metabolism and obesity, ischemic heart disease… and much more. The good new is, treatment is simple and effective.

Learning About Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a condition in which the muscles in your throat relax to such an extent that they narrow or even block the airways. The airways can become blocked for as long as ten seconds which forces the body to wake up during sleep in order to restore its normal breathing pattern. Once the breathing pattern has been restored to normal the patient will fall back to sleep only to be woken once more a few minutes later. This can then continue throughout the and in most cases the individual suffering from sleep apnoea is unaware of this.
